Your Cash Flow Slowed, Accounts Receivable Factoring Can Help

In the most recent issue of Fortune Small Business there is a great article by Jay Gotz. In Jay’s article "Surviving the Recession" he summarizes through downturns in the market you can afford decreased profits if you have cash flow, however the converse is not true. I could not agree more, cash flow is the life blood to any company. Without proper cash flow the business will not function properly and in many cases the ownership and management will pull away from their long terms success strategies to solve short term cash flow issues.

<script type="text/javascript"

According to a survey by Fortune and Zogby International of business owners in early December they found, 55% of small business owners say it has become harder to collect receivables in the past six weeks. Of those who say it’s gotten harder, 60% describe this as a serious problem. Spending much time in the private sector, prior to founding Troon Funding Services. I can confirm this is a serious problem, because as accounts receivables grow, cash flow tightens.

Accounts Receivable Factoring will allow your company to convert those accounts receivables to cash. As I stated in a previous article cash is king, especially in this economic environment. This additional working capital can be used to take advantage of payment discounts offered by your vendors, look for new opportunities in the market place due to your competitors inability to ship timely, and/or to pay down existing expenses. In all cases with factoring, your business will be in a better cash position.

Is Accounts Receivable Factoring right for You…

Accounts receivable factoring can actually be a very smart move in the game of business if played correctly. To make some quick money, a business owner will sell their receivables at a discounted price to us for cash. In turn, we will turn take full responsibility of the account. Unlike a bank that charges interest on the businesses loan balance, Troon Funding will charge a small discount fee that is paid after your customer submits payment. Again, this method of financing is not a loan and is most beneficial to businesses looking for immediate cash flow, specifically for invoices less than 90 days old.

You know those days when you really love what you do for your career. This article is about just one of those days. I did a deal for a client that Discount Factoring was the absolutely perfect option for his business and everything went off without a hitch.

The client services the major industry providers for Telecom in the country. Over the last 3 years he has been a two man operation. Due to some changes in that industry, they are just starting some major overhauls of systems and that is what this mans company does. Since he had been working with these companies for the last few years and they like his work he has become a preferred supplier of service for them.

On the outside looking in it looks like a great success story, right? Consider this. Now he has to hire more staff, more equipment and travel more. The terms of collection are net 60 so it will be 2 months before he gets paid for services rendered today. He has to pay for supplies net 30 and the employees are to be paid bi-weekly.

This is a common problem of cash flow, and is a major hurdle for companies when they experience rapid growth. Of course the first reaction is to go to the bank and get an Operating Line of Credit. Unfortunately, the bank did not look favorably on the application and denied it promptly as there was insufficient financial data to satisfy the bank guidelines.

The Solution: Small Business Factoring. I set the company up with a Line of Credit using the Accounts Receivable as security and the advance rate is 85% of what ever he has in open AR.

It took less than 1 week from the time I received the application until it was funded. The client was very pleased and now he can do as much work for the Telecom Industry as they want him to do without fear of now being able to have the cash flow to sustain the funds sitting is AR.

Many companies offer competitive rates, in fact a good financial company will offer rates equal or lower than traditional bank loan rates. But you must watch carefully and understand what rates are being offered. Variable interest rates can seriously affect your ultimate payout. If you are locked into a variable interest rate make sure you understand what the stipulations are and what things will affect your interest rate. Many loans programs are tied to LIBOR or the prime bank loan rate which could fluctuate and skyrocket. An exit strategy must be contemplated if you have a variable interest rate, otherwise your payments may become too difficult to handle.

Accounts Receivable Factoring Firms

Since every company has varying accounts receivables factoring programs it is paramount you choose the right financial company. There are companies out there with deceiving marketing materials that put excessive emphasis on gains and profit while ignoring asset protection and risk all together. Remember that "If it looks too good to be true, it probably is". All lenders design programs that protect them. And equally all companies offer services and products that are going to be profitable. The difference is that some companies remain fair and honest while others attempt to profiteer.

  Success

The key to succeeding with accounts receivable factoring is planning and due diligence. Researching your financial company, your businesses needs and the terms of the agreement is what will provide a good deal. Including other experienced professionals is also important.

Many of you may already know what credit card factoring is. For those who don’t; it is the process in which an investor (factor) purchases a portion of your future, unprocessed credit card sales at a discounted rate. Who in turn advances you a lump sum of money that you pay back over an extended period using a percentage of your daily credit card sales.

Did you catch all that? Here is a more detailed description of what credit card factoring is;

They are frequently referred to a merchant cash advance or a merchant loan.

A business factor pays for a portion of your future credit card sales at a discounted rate. The amount is based upon your businesses proven record of monthly credit card sales.

Hypothetically; if your business makes $10K in monthly credit card sales, a factor might advance you $25K.

The factor will then set up your credit card processing machine to use a small percentage of your daily credit card sales to automatically pay back the advanced amount. Keep in mind that you retain 100% of your cash sales.

Because a percentage of your daily credit card sales are used; the amount you pay back is different each day. This is referred to as a flexible pay back schedule. On slow days you pay back less, on busy days you might pay more. It works with the flow of your business so as not to create too much strain on your business and to insure a successful payback.

Generally, the merchant cash advance is set up so that your advance is paid back in approximately 6 – 9 months. Of course this is just a target. The amount of time it takes to pay it back depends on how well your business performs. These are particularly beneficial for businesses that are unable to get a bank loan or if they cannot wait the time it takes for a bank loan to be processed.

What can credit card factoring do for your business?

Here are a few examples of why you might consider getting a merchant cash advance;

You need working capital for your business and you’ve been turned down by the bank,

An opportunity has presented itself and you cannot wait the several weeks it takes for the bank to process your loan.

You like the freedom of having additional working capital when you need it.

Here is something to think about; what would your business do if it had access to an additional $5K to $500K?

This is what some of the businesses that we’ve funded did with the money we gave them;

The caught up on some of their outstanding debt before it had a negative impact their credit.

They used the money to expand or remodel their business.

They expanded their current marketing strategy to go after new markets.

They invested their money to open a new business location.

They bought out an existing business partner.

Looking at the list; do you notice what all of these things have in common? They used their merchant cash advance and invested it in a way that will have a positive effect on their business for many years to come. How does your business fit into this list? How would you invest in your business?

Credit Card Factoring is Expensive

Credit card factoring is expensive compared to other types of loans, but if you factor in the potential loss your business might suffer without the money. Or if you consider what you stand to gain with the additional funding; it could be one of the best business decisions you’ve made all year.

Receivables factoring has been around for many years. Credit card factoring in its present form has been around a relatively short time. It is an industry that is growing quickly and for good reason when you consider our current economy.
Obtaining growth capital has always been a major challenge – and stumbling block – for companies. Many business owners feel that the available options from a bank, basically a business loan or a line of credit, are close to impossible to obtain. Furthermore, most business owners have to go through a loan underwriting cumbersome process that takes weeks only to find out if they qualify. And, more often than not, they don’t qualify because banks have tough requirements and usually demand that the business owner have spotless credit.

However, if you own a business that is selling services or products to good commercial clients, you have an alternative option. And you won’t find it at a bank.

The option is called accounts receivable factoring and it enables you to capitalize on your biggest asset, your invoices from great clients. Factoring provides you with the working capital you need to grow your business and can help you if your biggest challenge is that your customers pay in 30 to 60 days. Factoring provides you with an advance payment, giving you the necessary funds to meet ongoing expenses such as payroll or rent. It eliminates the 60 day wait and gets you paid in as little as 2 days.

As opposed to business loans or lines of credit, accounts receivable factoring is easy to obtain. The biggest requirement is that you do business with clients that are creditworthy and pay reliably. It can work with startups or established companies. Furthermore, accounts receivable financing lines have limits that are tied to your sales. This means that as your sales increase, so does your financing.

Receivables factoring is also fairly easy to use. It works as follows:

1. You deliver goods / services and invoice for them

2. The factoring company buys your invoice and advances you up to 90% (1st installment) of the invoice

3. Once the invoice is paid, the factoring company rebates the remain funds less a small fee (the 2nd installment)

Receivable financing fees vary based on a number of parameters but can range from 1.5% to 3%, making it a very affordable business financing tool. To qualify for accounts receivable factoring, your company must sell goods / services to commercial or government customers and have profit margins of at least 10%.

Controlling your accounts receivable factoring costs is based on three main components – the time it takes to collect invoices, the volume of invoices factored, and the creditworthiness of your customers. Each of these issues is important in establishing how much you will pay to factor your invoices, but there are ways to control your costs.

Time

Part of the financial risk that incurs when purchasing an account receivable is related to the time it takes for a bill to be paid. Time is therefore an important commodity that can affect your fee: the longer an invoice is outstanding, the higher the fee. (A 60-day invoice would consequently cost more than a 30-day invoice.) You can reduce your time-related costs in two key ways: 1) Factor customers that pay their bills quickly. 2) Send invoices only when you absolutely need money. By retaining your invoices for a while after you provide the services/goods to your customer, you will decrease the amount of time a factoring company owns the account receivable, which will decrease your fee.

Volume

Volume refers to the total amount of money that is factored each month. Opposite from time, higher volume means lower fees, while lower volume means higher fees. Eventually, you can lower your fees by factoring larger dollar amounts and larger invoices. Also, long-term relationships that result in factoring large cumulative dollars can result in lower fees.

Customer Creditworthiness

Unlike a bank loan, the ability to factor is dependent on your customer’s creditworthiness, not your own. Therefore, the factoring company is assuming risk based on your customer’s credit history, which affects your fee; marginal credit means higher fees, while good credit means lower fees. The most straightforward way to decrease your fee is to factor invoices due from customers with good credit history. While most factoring companies will only factor customers who have acceptable credit, those who have better credit will be less expensive. While other variables can affect the factoring fee, time, volume and credit are the most significant components thata factoring companywill evaluate. By carefully usingaccounts receivable factoring services you can minimize your costs.

Are you a subcontractor that is billing GC’s, commercial clients or the government? Can’t afford to wait 30 to 60 days to get paid? Read this article to learn about construction factoring.

One of the biggest challenges for construction subcontractors is meeting payroll. Paying employees and suppliers is often hard because get paid 30 to 60 days after they submit their invoices.

Whether we like it or not, this is the way things are done in the construction industry. And, unless the subcontractor has a large cash reserve, waiting 60 days can be close to impossible. Especially with the never ending payroll responsibilities.

Going to the bank to get a business loan or line of credit won’t help much. Banks are notorious for not lending money to subcontractors. Furthermore, banks usually require at least 2 years worth of audited financial statements showing a profit, and their loans can take weeks or months to get setup.

There is an alternative. This alternative can eliminate the payment wait and get invoices paid in a little as 2 days. Getting paid quickly allows subcontractors to easily pay employees and suppliers on time, enabling them to grow their businesses. The name of this financing tool is construction factoring, a special type of invoice factoring. Factoring receivables is an easy way to finance and grow your construction business.

Factoring works as follows:

1. You send a bill to the GC or client for a progress segment or completed job
2. The factoring company advances you up to 75% of the submitted invoice. You get immediate use of the money. The remaining 25% is kept as a reserve.
3. Once your client pays the invoice, the 25% reserve is rebated to you, less a small fee

The biggest requirement to qualify for factoring financing is to do business with reputable GC’s or commercial clients and to have a well-run business. Generally, a factoring financing line can be set up in as little as 5 days.

As you can see, accounts receivable factoring provides you with a great tool to finance your growing construction business.

About Commercial Capital LLC:
We provide invoice factoring and construction factoring financing to subcontractors.
If you are a subcontractor working on a project, then you could qualify for something called construction factoring. Are you waiting from 30 to 90 days after completing a job in order to get pa…

Recently I had a client contact me looking to take out a Factoring Loan. It has been some time since I had heard it referred to as this, but what he was referring to was Accounts Receivable Factoring.

Technically, Factoring is not a real loan; it is an advance on money that your company is already owned. While the accounting guidelines can be argued one way or another, the fact is, when a Factoring Loan is done, the Receivables are verified with the party that owes the money and further verifies that they are going to pay the invoices.

Under this circumstance, the funds that are advanced to the company that raised the Invoices are merely an advance on the funds that will be collected under the short term agreement.

Other people refer to Accounts Receivable Factoring as Invoice Factoring. This is accurate and is only switching out the terms Accounts Receivable for Invoice so there is little confusion over this.

The fact that the US Government is now creating an Invoice Factoring facility or Factoring Loan for many of the suppliers in the Detroit Michigan area is a very positive vote of confidence for the validity and acceptance of Invoice Factoring or the Factoring Loan not to mention the confidence that is now being generated in the economy.

The manufactures of United States and Canada have been torn apart by the recession we are currently in and many businesses have fallen due to the lack of working capital to pay suppliers, payroll and other operations expenses that the businesses need to support regardless if there are collections on their Accounts Receivable or not.

Unfortunately several companies in the manufacturing industry have not been able to make it through our recession, many of which were generational family businesses and they suffered to the point of closing down. I know of one such company that was started in 1937 by the Great Great Grandfather of the owner that had to close the doors of the family business due to cash flow problems.

Whether you call it a Factoring Loan or Invoice Factoring or something else along those lines, be sure to take advantage of this Financing method for your business.
